In a poignant display of unity, several hundred Israeli and Palestinian women, donned in white, gathered in Jerusalem and the West Bank just days before the devastating Hamas terrorist attacks. Chanting “Stop killing our children,” these women voiced a powerful plea for peace, emphasizing the crucial role women play in fostering dialogue.

Voices united for peace

At the heart of this demonstration was a resounding call for peace. Women from the Israeli Women Wage Peace movement and the Palestinian Women of the Sun association jointly declared, “we want peace.” Houda Abou Arqoub of ALLMEP highlighted the historic partnership between Israeli and Palestinian women, stating, “This is the first time we’ve had a real partnership between Israeli and Palestinian women on an equal footing.”

The message was crystal clear: “Our message is that we want our children to stay alive rather than die,” asserted Houda Abou Arqoub. Undeterred by challenges, these women displayed unwavering commitment to altering the status quo and instigating dialogue towards peace.

A plea for renewed talks

Pascale Chen from Women Wage Peace stressed the event’s goal to amplify the joint call from Israeli and Palestinian mothers for leadership to return to the negotiation table. In an era where the peace process seems distant, these courageous women emphasized the indispensable role of women in shaping peace.

Tragedy strikes with Hamas attacks

However, just three days later, Hamas unleashed a brutal offensive that claimed the lives of 1,200 Israelis and left dozens kidnapped. The attacks, carried out by Hamas fighters infiltrating Israel, resulted in a wave of violence, with victims ranging from the streets to homes and even a rave party.

In response, the Israeli parliament approved the formation of a war cabinet, reflecting the gravity of the situation. The aftermath saw retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip, leading to the loss of over 1,400 Palestinian lives.

In the face of this devastating conflict, the collective plea for peace by Israeli and Palestinian women stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation are essential for a better future.
